The Carnegie Mellon University Math Club (CMUMC) is a student-run organization dedicated to promoting interest in mathematics and mathematical research among the undergraduates of Carnegie Mellon University. The primary function of the CMUMC is to host a series of lectures addressed to undergraduates, which occur roughly twice a month. In the past, topics have included Fermi estimation, algebraic topology, the Hausdorff metric, and crossing numbers of complete graphs. Each year, the club participates in CMU’s Spring Carnival by building a booth with fun mathematical puzzles on the inside. CMUMC is happy to participate in Stock the School and hopes to spread their enthusiasm for mathematics to a younger generation! Learn more at club.math.cmu.edu.
The First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood (FPCE) is thrilled to participate in Stock the School and to support the students of Wilkinsburg Middle School as they explore music. FPCE requested to sponsor the music department as music plays a great role in the life of the church. The congregation of FPCE recognizes the importance of music education and thanks the staff of Wilkinsburg Middle School for their efforts to encourage the talents of our young neighbors. FPCE is a “Community Church”, open to all and welcoming to all. From community dinners to various mission and service projects, to an after-school program, the congregation at FPCE strives to provide enriching opportunities to people in every walk of life. Learn more about FPCE at www.fpcedgewood.org or visit FPCE at 120 East Swissvale Avenue, Pittsburgh.
South Avenue United Methodist Church is located at 733 South Avenue. Our goal is to be open to all people as we seek to be in ministry with and for the Wilkinsburg Community and beyond. On the third Saturday of each month the congregation has a clothing closet and on the last Sunday of each month we have a hospitality luncheon. We may be best known as “the church with the friendly ladies that sell great hotdogs and corn” during the Wilkinsburg Farmers Market. The members and friends of South Avenue United Methodist are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of Stock the School. We hope you will stop by and visit us. For more information please check us out at www.southavenueumc.org or call the church office at 412-371-7421.
St. Stephen’s is the local Episcopal church for the following communities and neighborhoods: Edgewood, Swissvale, Churchill, Wilkinsburg, Regent Square, and Point Breeze. The church welcomes visitors from those neighborhoods and beyond. St. Stephen’s gladly supported the Science Department in the Stock the School program, with a very generous outpouring of donations from the congregation. St. Stephen’s support of local youth is also evident in their after-school program for elementary school children from surrounding neighborhoods called the Neighborhood Youth Outreach Program (NYOP). For more information about NYOP, please call 412-243-6101 or visit St. Stephen’s website at www.ststephenspittsburgh.org.
The graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh’s History of Art and Architecture Department know the value of arts education at any level. By participating in Stock the School, they hope to demonstrate to the students and staff at Wilkinsburg Middle School that they value efforts to bring art into the lives of young students. The History of Art and Architecture Department offers a variety of public events and lectures throughout the year. View their calendar online at www.haa.pitt.edu.
The Future Educators of America (FEA) is an undergraduate club at the University of Pittsburgh designed to help equip future teachers with the necessary skills and opportunities for success. Through volunteer opportunities in the local Pittsburgh area, as well as education and career development workshops, students are able to give back to the community while gaining vital skills for their futures as educators. We are honored to help Wilkinsburg in the Stock the School drive by donating materials for special education classes. Many FEA members are planning on either focusing in special education, or are going into the dual certification program, MOSAIC, in which they are certified in both a subject area and special education. We are happy to assist in providing important supplies to help students excel!
