The PACES Veterans: Discuss.Reflect.Serve. program was piloted in the spring of 2015 at Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy. The Veterans: DRS program is offered in various formats: as an intensive, multi-class activity (like our pilot program at SciTech) or as a shortened one-day program (like our November 2015 visit to Elizabeth Forward High School) or as several community-based interactive opportunities, like our May 2016 outreach (in which we again provided programming for Pittsburgh SciTech, including a field trip to Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, as well as
arrangements for a fundraiser and community clean-up event). We may be able to plan and provide another option if there is a better fit for a particular school or class. If your school is interested in learning more about Veterans: DRS or if you would like to arrange a visit from PACES, please contact us.
This program seeks to engage students in discussion about a variety of veterans' affairs topics. In addition, we aim to bring in actual veterans as guest speakers to the classroom. Students are asked to reflect upon the material discussed, expressing their own conclusions and questions about veterans' affairs in writing or other creative outlets. Finally, we provide information and opportunities for students to create a service project so they may "serve those who served." With completion of the full, intensive program, PACES presents the students' work and projects in some kind of community event or setting.
